Every plaque in the collection started as an ordinary load of washing. This page is the useful part of the memorial. The advice comes from people who take washing machines apart for a living, the theories are kept elsewhere, and the one invented paragraph is labeled.

Where they actually go

Six exits from
an ordinary wash.

Socks do not dematerialize. They hide in clothes, fall beside machines, and sometimes get caught inside them. Start with the places you can reach without taking anything apart.

The door seal

On a front-loader, a sock can slip through a gap or a split in the rubber gasket during a fast spin and drop into the space beneath the drum. GE's James Darmstadt describes this as the classic disappearance.

Do this. With the machine off and the drum stopped, look inside the folds of the seal. Remove loose items carefully; there may be sharp objects. A torn seal needs attention from a repair service.

The drain pump filter

Some washers, especially front-loaders, have an accessible drain pump filter. It catches small items before they reach the pump. Its location and cleaning procedure depend on the model.

Do this. Check your manual first. If it provides a user-accessible filter, switch off and unplug the washer, let hot water cool, and follow its draining instructions before opening the filter. Have a shallow container and towels ready. Leave inaccessible parts to a technician.

The dead space in a top-loader

Wayne Archer of Sears Home Services explains that clothes walk toward the edge of a load and can slip into the gap between the inner basket and the outer tub, where they stay.

Do this. Stop filling the drum to the brim. Overloading is what pushes small items over the rim in the first place.

The dryer exhaust

A missing or damaged lint screen can let small items enter the dryer's lint passage. Where they end up depends on the machine. A blocked exhaust needs attention even if every sock is accounted for.

Do this. Clean the lint filter before each load and make sure it fits properly. Do not run the dryer with a missing or damaged filter. Follow the manual for vent maintenance and leave internal retrieval to a technician.

Other clothes

Socks can get tangled inside duvet covers, fitted-sheet corners, hoodie sleeves, and pant legs. Static in the dryer can also make small items cling to other clothes. Check the laundry before suspecting the machine.

Do this. Turn the duvet cover inside out and shake it before you accept a loss. Check the pants from that same load.

The gap beside the machine

The floor under the machine, the space behind it, and the seam at the bottom of the laundry basket. No mystery, no mechanism, just gravity and a poorly lit corner.

Do this. Take a flashlight to it once. Most people find more than one sock, and at least one thing they were blaming someone for.

The routine

Five habits that
keep pairs together.

None of this is clever. It works because it removes the moment when a sock is loose, wet, and unaccounted for.

Pair them before they go in
Put pairs in a zipped mesh laundry bag, leaving room for water to circulate. Follow the bag's care instructions, including whether it can go in the dryer.

Leave room in the drum
An overloaded machine pushes small items to the edges, and it washes worse. Archer makes the point that correct loading fixes several complaints at once.

Unroll every ball
A tightly balled pair is harder to wash and dry thoroughly. It can also hide one sock inside another until the laundry is put away.

Count out, count in
Notice the gap at the machine, not three weeks later. A sock found in the seal on the same day is an inconvenience. The same sock found in November is a tribute.

Give singles a waiting room
Keep unmatched socks in one place and check it when you fold a load. Pick a date to sort the box. Anything still alone can become a dust cloth, a puppet, or an enthusiastic mismatch.

Where that figure comes from.

Search for missing socks and you will meet this figure within about a minute. It comes from a 2016 study Samsung commissioned to launch a washing machine, which surveyed 2,000 people in the UK and had a psychologist and a statistician produce a formula called the sock loss index. Its inputs include how much laundry you do, how many people live with you, and how much you resent the task.

The study is real in the sense that it happened. It is also marketing, written to sell an appliance with a door in the door, and its numbers describe survey answers rather than counted socks. Quote it at parties. Do not build a religion on it. The original announcement is still up, formula and all.

Prevention is a courtesy we extend to socks, not a promise they have agreed to. A sock that has decided to go will go, and it will do so on a Sunday, from a load you were quietly proud of.

The maintenance team has asked us to state that this position has no basis whatsoever, that they have recovered thirty-one socks from drain pumps this year, and that every one of them was in a drain pump rather than another dimension. We have noted their objection and filed it.
