They went in as a pair.Only one came out.
A public record of socks lost in the wash. The memorial is entirely imaginary. The drawer, sadly, is not.
Everyone here is
somebody's left one.
Nobody here by that name.
Which, given the subject, is thematically appropriate. Try a shorter word.

Lost Sock Memorial Day.
One day a year we stop pretending it will turn up. Wear a deliberately mismatched pair, tell someone why, and do not go looking behind the machine.
CountingWhere do
they go?
Theories held by this institution, and one piece of advice that actually works.
The official theory
There is a door in the back of every dryer. We have not found it, and we are not looking for other explanations. Five more theories, filed and numbered →
The advice that works
A zipped mesh bag. That is the whole tip. Pairs go in together, come out together, and nobody has to be memorialized. Also worth checking: duvet covers, fitted sheets, and the inside of the pant legs you were wearing. Where socks actually go, and how to stop it →
What counts as lost
Two full wash cycles with no sighting. Under the bed is not lost, it is hiding. A sock found in a coat pocket in October has not returned from anywhere; it simply had a better year than you did.
Someone came back
Then we celebrate, loudly. Report the reunion and tell us where they turned up. The owner reviews every report before updating a public tribute.
Somebody should
say a few words.
Name, a photograph if one survives, and whatever you remember. If writing an obituary for a sock feels like a lot, tick the box and we will write one for you.
